Email Marketing’s Role in The Sales Funnel

Have you ever wondered why some emails catch your eye while others get lost in the sea of your inbox? You’ve probably heard email marketing is crucial, but figuring out how to make it work within your sales funnel can be daunting. You’re not alone in feeling this way! Many new teacherpreneurs struggle to write emails that truly resonate and convert. But I promise you CAN transform your email strategy from mundane to magnetic. Let’s learn to make email marketing your sales funnel’s best asset!

In my previous post, we looked at the entire sales funnel as part of your marketing plan across all channels. Today, we’re going to dig a little deeper into the email marketing sales funnel.

Email marketing is a powerful tool for building relationships and driving sales. Whether you’re an educational coach, a Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) seller, a membership provider, or a tutor, understanding how email marketing fits into your sales funnel can transform how you engage with your audience.

Understanding the email marketing sales funnel can transform how you engage with your audience.

Let’s recap the sales funnel stages and learn how to write engaging emails designed to nurture relationships in each part of the funnel.

Understanding the Email Marketing Sales Funnel

Email marketing is a versatile tool that can be tailored to fit each stage of the sales funnel. By strategically timing your emails, you can guide prospects through their buying journey while building a meaningful relationship.

Let’s dig a little deeper into each stage of the email marketing sales funnel you’ll use to guide potential customers from initial awareness to making a purchase, using the AIDA model—Awareness, Interest, Desire, Action.

Awareness

This first stage of the sales funnel is where potential customers learn about your brand, products, and services. The goal here is to capture attention and spark curiosity. For TPT sellers or tutors, this might mean showcasing your educational materials or results gained from your teaching expertise.

In this stage, email marketing helps introduce your business beyond the quick first impression that enticed readers to join your list (often through a lead magnet). Sending a welcome email when someone joins your list is a must! Use this email to introduce your business and highlight what makes you unique. This is the perfect opportunity to tell your story and establish a connection with your audience.

Implementing lead magnets is a highly effective strategy to expand your reach and foster connections through email marketing campaigns.

This email should have a clear, compelling subject line, introduce you/your brand, and plant the seeds for future engagement. The email should show you deeply understand your reader, reassure them they’re in the right place, and gently highlight how you can help them on their journey. Including ways to connect with you on active social media channels is another good way to help move readers beyond the awareness stage.

To recap:

  • Use a friendly and conversational tone
  • Offer a brief overview of your offers and how they align with your audience’s needs.
  • Include personal touches, like addressing recipients by name

For teachers and tutors, this could include your teaching experience, philosophy, and relatable tidbits. You could also link to 2-3 blog posts that serve as great starting points.

Interest

Once you’ve captured their attention, it’s time to nurture interest. Here, potential customers are researching, comparing, and considering their options. You need to provide valuable information that addresses their needs and concerns.

Create a series of emails that provide value and demonstrate your expertise. Offer tips, insights, and trending industry news to build trust and demonstrate your expertise. How can you help prospects move closer to making a decision?

To recap:

  • provide value
  • link to blog posts
  • gently introduce products/services

For tutors, this could involve sending a series of emails offering tips on effective learning strategies or testimonials from satisfied families. For TPT sellers, it could be a series of emails related to the lead magnet they downloaded to join your list. No matter what you send, it should reinforce that your products/services are worth a closer look.

These evergreen email sequence tips can increase your sales and engagement with marketing that grow your business around the clock.

Desire

At this stage, prospects are leaning toward making a purchase. The focus is on turning interest into desire by highlighting the benefits of your offers. The goal is to focus more on the benefits/results of your products and services rather than just their features. These emails are a great place to include success stories, reviews, and testimonials that highlight real-world results.

This section of the sales funnel should also focus on creating an emotional connection. Highlighting how your product or service can solve their problems or enhance their lives encourages them to envision the positive outcomes of choosing you. PAS (problem, agitation, solution) is a popular copywriting technique to use in this stage.

To further enhance desire, share exclusive offers or discounts that incentivize prospects to take the next step. A well-crafted email with a compelling CTA can be the final nudge they need to move forward.

To recap:

  • highlight benefits
  • use storytelling
  • share proof

Will your products save teachers time? Will you help families reduce homework frustration? Paint the story of a before/after using your products and services.

Action

The final stage is when the prospect decides to make a purchase. The goal is to make this step as smooth and enticing as possible. Clear calls to action (CTAs), limited-time offers, and countdown timers can create a sense of urgency, motivating readers to become buyers.

CTAs are tools that provide clear signals and directives to guide visitors toward action. Use these call to action examples as a guide.

To recap:

  • use call to actions
  • create a sense of urgency
  • offer specific promotions

For TPT sellers, this might mean offering a discount code or a special bundle deal to encourage immediate purchases. For tutors, focusing on time-sensitive enrollment deadlines or limited space can do the trick. You could also offer a bonus or bundles– buy 4 sessions, get the 5th free, etc.

Writing Engaging and Relevant Emails

Writing engaging and relevant emails is essential to capturing your audience’s attention and guiding them through the sales funnel. By leveraging these techniques, you can deliver timely, relevant content to your audience without overwhelming them with your resources.

Here are some key strategies to consider for your email marketing sales funnel.

Personalization

Personalization goes beyond using the recipient’s name—it involves tailoring your content to their preferences and behaviors. Use data and insights to segment your audience and send targeted emails that resonate with their needs. Tailor content to match their interests, purchase history, or location. Personalized emails show that you understand their needs and are committed to providing value.

When it comes to consistently reaching your target audience, email marketing segmentation is king... but how does it work exactly??

For TPT sellers, personalized emails could include content related to a specific subject or grade level. For tutors, it could be separating by tutoring interest (test prep, learning disabilities, study skills, age, etc.) By delivering content that speaks directly to their interests, you increase the likelihood of engagement.

Personalized recommendations based on previous purchases can also drive repeat sales and build customer loyalty.

Compelling Content

Your emails should provide value and relevance to your audience. Include clear and concise messaging that highlights the benefits of your offerings. Create content that educates, entertains, or solves a problem.

Use a mix of text, images, GIFs, and even videos to create an engaging experience. Experiment with different templates, color, blocks, etc. to see what your audience prefers. Use UTM codes to track clicks!

Clear CTAs

Every email should have a clear call to action that guides recipients to their next steps. Whether it’s signing up for a seminar, downloading a resource, or making a purchase, the CTA should be prominent and easy to follow.

Consider using buttons or hyperlinks to make CTAs visually appealing and clickable. By providing a seamless and actionable path, you increase the chances of conversions.

Also be careful about the amount of different CTAs used in each email. I like to think of this as a restaurant– sometimes you’re offering a buffet of options and other times you’re really focusing on the main course.

Set Up Automation

Automation allows you to schedule and send emails based on triggers, such as user actions or time intervals. This enhances the effectiveness of your email marketing efforts, allowing you to deliver the right message at the right time. Create automated workflows that guide prospects through the sales funnel, delivering the right message at the right time.
