Websites that are difficult to navigate, slow to load, or lack clear calls-to-action can frustrate visitors who can’t quickly find what they’re looking for (attention spans online are getting shorter and shorter!) Instead of working for you, your website can lead to missed opportunities.

Your website is often the first impression potential clients or customers have of your brand when they find you organically through search results, so it’s crucial to present a polished and professional welcome to your customers.

Unfortunately, many TPT authors and tutors struggle to build a website on their own, but not for lack of trying! While your expertise lies in creating curriculum resources and educating others, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have an extensive knowledge of marketing or website design best practices. The biggest mistake I see with DIY websites is the photography selection. Being able to afford professional photography for you and your products isn’t always possible for new businesses, and that’s okay! If you take your own photos, follow these tips:

  • use natural light or ring lights that mock daylight
  • avoid heavy filters
  • prop your phone up with a timer instead of selfie mode
  • use a few simple backgrounds
  • crop logically in both portrait and landscape orientations
  • use several different angles
  • create a variety of photos within the same color family

If you do need to use stock photos, keep your brand colors and tone in mind. While stock photos are more generic than taking your own, the goal is to select photos that FEEL like they were taken just for you. If your logo and website elements are in pastels, your stock photos should have similar colors and a lot of white space to feel cohesive.

As a teacherpreneur your target audience is likely other educators or parents/students, so look for images that focus on people in learning environments with children the same age as your niche.

This strategic placement not only makes it easier for them to find what they’re looking for but also reinforces the value and expertise you offer. Avoid overwhelming visitors with too many options or burying important pages deep within your site’s architecture.

Your content is the heart of your brand and where the real value lies! When I build websites, I take a content-first approach. Your copy is THAT important and the website should be designed around what you have to say. Sometimes when you work with website templates, you only have 3 or 5 lines to fill with copy, so you crunch and condense to make it fit. Other times you only need a few lines to get your message across, but have to write fluff to fill three paragraphs. Resist that urge! Focus on what you need to stay first and then design around your copy.

Mobile devices have become an integral part of our daily lives, shaping the way we consume and interact with online content. While I’m still old school and prefer to shop on my laptop, I often first discover content and brands through social media on my phone. I frequently visit websites on my phone first and then screenshot or email myself impressive links to explore further on my computer later.
